We Are Candles in the Wind
Blown by the winds of change

Here is an excerpt from one of the chapters in my latest book: What the Wind Told Me: 21 Inspirational Messages. This one talks about the fact that we are all candles in the wind.
Our wooden house isn’t perfectly sealed. When there are strong winds, they sneak through imperceptible cracks around window frames, slip under doorways and squeeze between the cedar cladding.
When I set a match to a candle and put it in the centre of the table, the flame flickers fitfully, revealing the presence of the wind. The candle never goes out, though, not until I lean in close at the end of the evening and emit a short, sharp breath directly at the flame through pursed lips.
This lit candle fluttering in the night wind reminds me of my life, and of my eventual snuffing out.

I am like a candle in the wind.
The white wax is my body, the wick is my heart, and the flame that has burned every day of my life is spirit – an eternal spark made visible through my existence.
A candle has a small flame. It doesn’t shed light on everything happening in the world or reveal the future. It only shows what is nearby, right now. And that’s enough for me to be going on with.
Just like a candle flame continually responds to air movement, I continually respond to what is, because it’s what is that is directing my movements.
The winds of life blow on me constantly, making me bend, twist, bob, dance, twinkle, wink, flash, and sometimes almost go out when proverbial storms blow. But I’ll never go out until a short, sharp breath from everything that has led to the moment of my ending, puts me out.
That’s when my eternal spark is needed the most. That’s when it burns brightest.
And when I go out, ah! who knows?
A quote from Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi:
A little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness.
